Ryan & Katie : Professional Portraits

Belated Merry Christmas wishes to all my wonderful fans and customers! It was a great year at the Houg home... our little guy, Collin, really enjoyed decorating the tree, making cookies and waiting for Santa. He's almost three now, so it's a blast shopping for him and his reactions are just priceless. He doesn't care what he gets or how much you spend and he'll look at you with those big eyes and say "You got a present for ME???" So sweet!
Just thought I'd share that little tidbit with you, but now I am happy to share some images from a session I squeezed in before Christmas.
These pictures are for my insurance agent, Ryan and his lovely girlfriend, Katie. They are just so perfect for each other. He's such a sweetheart, and she seems like she is equally kind-hearted. And a major plus, they both love their kitties, Franklin and Bubba. :) A match made in heaven.
I designed a super-cute holiday card for them. So I'm hoping you were on their list, but maybe I'll share the design here in a couple days. It was perfect to take some pictures in my lobby/gallery area, by the fireplace.
Katie is just starting to take guitar lessons, so Ryan thought it would be fun to showcase that new interest. Ryan, is a great musician and plays the organ for lots of events.
In addition to the insurance sales and organ playing, he also runs a great DJ service called Big Tones. I am not sure when this guy finds time to sleep! :)

Jackson : Newborn Photo Session

I showcased maternity pictures a few weeks back from Katie's Belly Love session and now it's time to meet the newest addition to their family... little Jackson.
Isn't he enough to melt your heart? I just wanted to nuzzle into his sweet little baby cheeks and cuddle with him all afternoon.
He was such a good little boy too, didn't really want to go to sleep for me. But, eventually I won! :) LOL! Always do!

Carys : 6 Month Baby : Portrait Session

Good morning! I couldn't wait to proof this little angel's pictures! Literally! I was working on them the same day, even though I had other things I should have done first! Sorry! I was just too excited.
She is a returning customer of mine and I just wanted to sneak a peek at the files and then I started weeding them out, and it was all downhill from there! LOL!
I love the cute little outfits her mom chose for her. Carys was a trooper, doing three clothing changes and some bare baby with the angel wings.
This little sweetie smiles sooo much. I just adore her.
Well, better get back to the things I should have been working on the other day!

The Lange Family : Albert Lea, MN : Family Portraits

I have known Christma for just a few months now, thanks to her wonderful cooking! That's right, you can get wonderful, oven-ready homemade meals from her. Once a month, she will deliver them (Albert Lea) or arrange a meeting to pick them up. I love the way this has taken so much stress out of my life. I don't have to worry as much about grocery shopping or what to make for supper, or clean up a mess from preparing the meal.

Okay, okay, back to the topic at hand. Their family portrait session.
So, the first time Christma delivered my meals to my home, I asked if she'd like to see my studio and that's when I think she fell in love! :) I was so happy when a month or two later she was asking about booking a session and family clothing recommendations.
We decided to do all dark, solids clothing because she loves my black and white images and wanted their faces to really be the focal point of the portraits. Aren't her kid's pictures gorgeous!? They are so much more intimate than the cheesy school portraits.

Maggie Ann : Newborn Photography

This little sweetheart is the newest love of one of my past clients. I love her daughter, Sophie, and I was excited to meet Maggie. Let's just say that Maggie is an ideal second child. She's very mellow and go-with-the-flow.
She was already a month old before we got together for newborn pictures, which isn't usually what I recommend. I like doing them 10 days or younger, but we got extremely lucky and she was awake at first, but not fussy - nothing a pacifier couldn't fix anyway! ;)
Then, the darling girl fell asleep in her mommy's arms as I set up a new background and we got all these adorable sleeping pictures too! Don't you just want to eat her up!

I am really excited to share these images with you from a recent wedding I photographed. I am thinking I might even have to do a second post later featuring all the amazing flowers and decorations. They had the coolest ideas!
I loved working with Christine. She was all about the non-traditional types of pictures. I just love all the images we got. It was so hard to narrow them down, and I'm totally pumped about seeing her this Saturday to share the whole set of wedding images with her and her family.

Kailey : Glenville High School : Senior Portraits

Well, today I am sharing some images from a senior session I wrapped up a week ago and I am so happy with the way these turned out.
Kailey, her mom and I had so much fun taking her senior photos.
Plus, Kailey and I discovered they make some bad-ass fried pickles at the North Star Xpress gas station in Northwood.
I had such a hard time narrowing down the proofs and I think I should apologize in advance to their family for making it wayyy too hard to choose! Seriously!

Katie : Belly Love : Maternity Portrait Session

This lovely lady was one of my brides last year and I am excited to be photographing her cute baby belly for her!
It was fun having both Katie and Justin back in the studio and hearing their new stories about getting ready for the baby. I just know they are going to make wonderful parents and I can't wait to meet their little one.
They are expecting a boy, and supposedly Justin has a boy name all picked out, but he's withholding it from everyone... including Katie! LOL!
I wish we could get him to spill the beans, but I guess we'll have to wait to find out. Hopefully Katie will like it too! ;)

Jasmin & Andy : Engagement Session

This is just the beginning of their Love Story photography... the wedding collections I offer all include a deluxe engagement session. No ten shots and you're out the door... no sir! I go all out, and let you do as much creative stuff as you like to get the true feeling of you as a couple.
But, this was far from the start of Andy and Jasmin's love story... :) Right? I think Andy had to "you know what" or get off the pot... *wink* Just kidding!
I could tell the minute I started clicking the camera that these two were in love. They are just the sweetest pair!
Their dogs, Boo and Earl came along for the fun too. They are so cuddly! I love the shot where Jasmin and Andy are tangled in their leashes. Too cute!
I can't wait for the wedding day, Jasmin is so beautiful. She will make a wonderful bride. And they both are so laid-back, just my type of people!

Michael : Senior Portraits : Alden High School

Well girls, this hottie is the younger brother of a senior girl I did portraits for a few years back... and I'm so glad the family chose to return to my studio. We had a lot of fun teasing Michael, but there are some really great shots of him laughing.
This guy can totally pull off the serious look too, without looking grumpy. (Trust me, it's NOT easy!)
We also took some great shots of him with his hunting gear because he's really into that. I totally understand the hunting thing because my husband is hopelessly obsessed with it himself and I go hunting every year with him.

Henry : Albert Lea High School : Senior Portraits

Henry here was a bit of a tough cookie to get to smile at first. He wasn't really looking forward to taking his senior portraits, like many mothers of teenagers can tell you is a pretty common thing.
I was up to the challenge of getting him to have fun though! :)
At least he was interested enough to bring his pickup truck and his FFA gear along.
I'm happy to say I got quite a few smiling pictures for his mom, and also a good share of serious poses to make Henry happy too.
Gotta love it!

Emily : Senior Portraits : NRHEG High School

That's right! This girl goes to NRHEG! My ol' stompin' grounds. :)
I actually babysat this neighbor girl of mine quite a bit when I was in high school. Our most fond memory together was when the little twerp talked me into letting her wear my new watch (a Tweety Bird one I'm embarrased to admit!) and then she "lost" it.
She really had me going until her mom came home and all of a sudden *poof* she new exactly where it was! Gotta love her!
So I am sharing more pictures than usual because I adore this girl. She's turned from a little brat into a wonderful young woman. I have to admit. *wink*
So sue me if I went a little overboard on the sneak peek here, the girl brought TEN outfits! LOL! Well, it is an "unlimited" session after all!

Zach : Senior Portraits : Albert Lea High School

I was happy to have Zach visit my studio because I'd already had the honor of taking his older sister's senior photos a couple years ago.
I had a lot of fun with Erica and his mom back then, so I knew I was in for a treat. And Zach is such a hottie! *wink*
He's got that charming, boy-next-door and the hunky-ness of a football player/wrestler. I bet when he reads this he will blush too... which I think is oh so cute!
But don't use the c-word when photographing a guy!!! They hate it! LOL!
That's okay. Now that I am a mom, I am always saying that they look so cute, too. I just can't help it!
Well, better go. I have a senior girl coming up tomorrow that you are going to love!!

Wally : One Year Old : Child Portrait Session

Well, I know a few women who are anxiously awaiting these pictures and I'm honestly shocked that they haven't emailed me a "I know you're really busy, but I was just wondering when you thought the pictures might be ready" - type of email! :)
I love those! Although I do appreciate those who wait patiently and silently as well! ;) I just don't mind the little notes to see if they've missed my email or something. It is proof that they are truly excited and know that they are going to like what they see.
I am going to share a few from a session today that started with a gift certificate a friend of mine purchased for her sister's baby shower about a year ago. Her sister lives up by the Twin Cities, but my friend has always been passionate about how much she loves my photography and so I was really looking forward to capturing her nephew for her.
I admit I was hoping at first to get to do his newborn session, but life speeds by so fast those first few weeks and it would have been pretty hard to get a newborn (preferrably 10 days or younger) down to the studio... so I was thrilled when I found out they were saving the certificate for the landmark "One Year" session.
I think those two sessions are two of the most important in a young child's life for the parents to capture and treasure the images because now I know just how fleeting those times and memories are! (Collin has taught me so much!) :) The newborn captures their smallness, newness and lets us get really creative with props, settings and what we want to decorate their nursery and our home... then the one year session captures their personality, facial expressions and it's all about them and what they want to do... and they're great for decorating your home and using for birthday invites or holiday cards/gifts.
Anyhow, back to Wally. Isn't that just the cutest name??? It's short for Walden. How stinking adorable is that? I love it.
So this little cutie wasn't giving us all that many smiles it seemed. But now that I look at the images I realize just how many great expressions he really gave us. They run the whole range of emotions from serious to silly to smiley.
Can't wait to hear their reactions!!!

Gabriella : Newborn Portrait Session

I felt like the luckiest photographer around when I got to have this little sweetheart visit my studio at only ten days old! She's the daughter to one of my past brides and her mommy has turned out to be one of my best friends! I'm so lucky my job has lead me to meet some incredible people.
Now, back to Gabbi. She is so wonderful and perfect. Her skin is so smooth and she has such beautiful hair that is so soft.
It was a little rough at first when her parents realized they left the diaper bag at home, LOL! But we quickly recovered and the princess had to have a snack anyway, so daddy ran back home to get it. Luckily I had a couple emergency newborn diapers and they both came in handy while he was gone.
I am really looking forward to photographing Gabriella as she grows up and changes... hitting those special milestones like sitting up, crawling, and walking. And all those birthdays! :)
But that's in the future, and I just want to snuggle up with this little peanut and enjoy her just the way she is right now. Small and such a little miracle!

Adam & Sara : Mason City, Iowa : Wedding Photography

The wedding featured today was shot in Mason City, Iowa in the Groom's parent's backyard. We had a perfect, late-summer afternoon for wedding portraits.
The couple chose a great location to go off-site for some additional fun, laid back images. It can be a challenge to get the wedding party to "let loose" before the ceremony, but this gang was such a fun bunch! They were always busting out into silly faces.
I can't believe how lucky I am to work with such amazing people all the time. This bride and groom stumbled across my website while searching the net from their home out in Washington. I was thankful they put their trust in me without ever meeting me in person until I was able to meet with the bride for a consultation the week of the wedding.
It's such a great feeling knowing I can preserve beautiful memories for this couple and their family to enjoy for generations to come!

Riley : USC Senior Portraits

Hi there! And thanks for stopping in to my blog. I can't wait to share a few of Riley's senior pictures with you. He is such a cutie! I LOVE his dimples!!
This session was shot totally at my studio which is a great option for guys. They don't usually want to drag the session out all day long like the girls do.
But guys, when given a little time to think about it, can come up with some pretty great ideas for their senior portaits.
Riley was no exception, he is really into pole vaulting. So he loaded his pole on the top of their SUV and brought it all the way down to Iowa just so I could take his pictures with it!! Gotta love it!
These turned out great and I think his mom will really be pleased with the results.

Tyler : Mason City High School Senior Portraits

It was one of those yucky rainy mornings when Tyler came to take his senior portraits, but between Tyler, his mom and I, we were determined to get some amazing images for him to have to commemorate his Senior Year. I think by looking at the images below you wouldn't know that it was less than ideal weather. (Cloudy days are actually the best for shooting portrait work because of the more soft, diffused lighting the clouds create)
Tyler's a great athlete and his family is really into sports, particularly football! :) We knew we needed to take some seriously cool pictures with his football gear. What do you think??
This guy is so handsome, we did lots of different outfits and even got him to take off his shirt and stand out in the lake. (Don't worry! It was his mom's idea!!)
I love those type of shots when they are tastefully done, but I'm not usually going to suggest it because I'd hate for anyone to be uncomfortable with the idea but not brave enough to tell me "no".
But, by all means, let me know if you want me to take more pictures of hunky guys showing off their muscles! ;)

Kadie : Senior Portraits

It's funny how you have those days where everything just "clicks", if you know what I mean. Sometimes it can be hard to find just the right background or just the right way to pose a person, but other days... the stars align and it's just one amazing photo after another!
I felt this way after Kadie's session. She had some great outfits and I was able to pair each with just the right background or location. I can't wait to hear her reaction to these.

Courtney : Albert Lea HS Senior Portrait Session

I am a little late in sharing a "sneak peek" of Courtney's images. I was so busy when I shot these and had such little time to get them online for her to look at that I totally missed giving her a preview, so I thought I'd share some now...
Her mom and step-mom are so excited for her to be a senior and experience all the fun that goes along with that final year in high school.
I thought Courtney was totally fun to photograph. Her outfits were very cute and were very flattering. I loved the cowboy boots her friend borrowed her. You might see those in a future blog post when I share the photos I took of the friend that borrowed them to her!
I just love taking senior portraits for these kids. They really are a once-in-a-lifetime experience where they get to feel beautiful and like a model for the day. It's so worth the money, as a parent, to see that boost in their confidence and self esteem as they "get comfortable" in front of the camera.

Lindsey and Andy : Wedding Photography, Southern Minnesota

I have known Lindsey since she was just a little girl. Our parents are friends and we attended the same church and our brothers were in the same Sunday School class, so I guess you can say we go way, way back! :)
But I hadn't seen or heard from Lindsey for years until one day she called me up and asked if I was available to photograph her wedding on August 28th. As always, I was thrilled she chose me. After all, this is one of the most important days of a girl's life and she trusted me to capture it beautifully and authentically.
Lindsey had a great attitude about her wedding day. She wanted to keep it simple, yet very classy and I think she accomplished that goal. Her hair and makeup, done by Expressions Salon in Albert Lea was perfect and timeless. I know she thought it might have been a little too much and didn't quite feel like herself when she looked in the mirror sometimes... but it photographed beautifully and the airbrushed makeup stayed on all day through the heat, wind and humidity.
The black and white tie affair theme was executed wonderfully by Jolene at Accents in Alden, Minn with their simply elegant room decor. There was just a subtle pop of color with the bridesmaids bouquets.
Lindsey, as you can see was absolutely radiant and Andy was the perfect groom - grinning from ear-to-ear most of the day. They are such an amazing couple, they even sang the duet "Picture" by Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow. I only wish I could sing like that!
Mega Force DJ kept all the guests bustin' a move on the dance floor and Sugar Chic Cakes satisfied even the most discriminating sweet-tooth in the crowd. And I think everyone got a good laugh when Andy dropped cake down the front of Lindsey's gown.
And lastly, as the sun went down I got some stunning pictures with the sunset.
Andy and Lindsey, I wish you many, many more days of happily ever after!

Sara : Senior Portrait Session

Good afternoon everyone! I am loving the sunshine and nice weather we are having today and it makes me sad that I'm stuck inside working on the computer... oh well, at least I have a nice window to look out. :)

We had some really nice weather the day we shot this session too, come to think of it. Sara was an amazing subject and really brought her a-game to the session.

Taylor : Senior Portraits : Austin High School

I knew I was going to have a good time when Taylor and her entourage walked into my studio. She brought with her sister, her sis's fiancee and her brother to share in the fun and they were a blast. I even took a picture of the three siblings for ma, who was stuck at work.
As you can see, Taylor is a natural beauty and it wasn't hard for me to see that I could get some great expressions out of her... but her smile truly won me over.
Taylor has such classic looks, when I see her I think "All-American girl" if you know what I mean.
Maybe I should put the Carrie Underwood song as her gallery music. :)

Jenna : Senior Portraits : Glenville High School Senior

Jenna is an absolute treat for me to photograph. Her mama was so awesome and had her do "Sweet Sixteen" photos a couple years ago at my studio and so she's had a little more practice than some of my seniors and instantly warmed up to the camera.
I am such a dork when I take photos, as my customers already know, I'm sure! :)
But, anyhow, I kept telling Jenna "I love you!" LOL! She prob thinks I lost it.
I guess, that's just how I get when I'm excited about what I'm capturing. I don't usually tell people that I love them, but it just kept popping out of my mouth. Looking back it still makes me smile.
I just wanna thank Jenna and her mom for making the day so much fun!

The Kruger Family : Family Portrait Session

Janssen-Distad Wedding : Albert Lea, MN Wedding Photography

I am so excited to share a sneak peek at these wedding pictures because Jodie has become a good friend over the last three months as I've been taking horseback riding lessons from her. She is an amazing woman and business person, even if she won't admit it herself. I adore the fact that she owns, breeds and trains horses... alas, I have yet to take the plunge myself to own a horse. Someday... someday. :)
Now, back to the wedding. It was a beautiful day for an outdoor wedding at their home. It did end up raining as the evening wore on... but they say that's good luck, right?!
I think her boys did a great job. They are so cute! As for Jodie & AJ... well, let's just say they are both pretty easy on the eyes! ;)

Kelsie : Mason City High School : Senior Portraits

I can't believe how many beautiful girls I get to photograph this year. I had a blast with Kelsie and her mom.
We got lucky and the weather was just gorgeous and I was on my A game. You know, there are those days where everything just works perfect... you are finding the perfect backgrounds for the outfits and the lighting is working just right... Anyhow...
I just love this girl. She is amazing and was a total natural in front of the camera.

The Schlaak Family

I just have a few moments tonight to post something on my blog. My little guy was hit with a nasty fever yesterday and so I haven't been able to really work for a day and a half... luckily my husband stepped up and helped me out Monday so I could still fulfill a Senior Session. I had reserved today for working on the computer all day, processing images... needless to say, with a two year old around, that didn't happen. :) Thankfully he has appeared very healthy today so I'm thinking it was a 24 hour thing and ran it's course pretty quick.
I wanted to share these images of a cute, young family that I photographed last week. The parents attended the same high school as I did and were just a grade behind me. It makes me so happy to photograph families of old high school friends! :) I love to share my gift with people I have a bit of a history with.

The Warneke Family

Well, I know this mom is anxious to see a sneak peek at their family session images. I would be too if I was this darn cute! :) LOL! I don't know how she does it. If I had this many kids to keep in line I'd be a mess for sure!
So I am so excited for them because the pictures are amazing, if I do say so myself!! I mean, it's not easy when you've got this many boys in one picture. Men generally have a 5 second attention span when it comes to getting their portrait taken... and it starts at a VERY young age.
Her youngest, William, is officially a cutie-patootie. I could love on him all day long! Isn't he just yummy. He's so good in front of the camera too. I got a bunch of fun ones of him. And it's a good thing because I haven't had him in the studio since his newborn session when he peed on his dad's arm. Remember that one??

Emily : Senior Portrait Session : Mason City High School

It's pretty rare that I get a senior that brings their mom & DAD with them to the studio. So I knew I was in for a treat when Emily came with both her parents. Apparently Dad went along when his older daughter had her senior pictures taken too, and so he figured he'd better be fair.
Let's just say that Emily's dad is a total sweetheart and he is a great assistant with the reflector! Now, I'd better get back to Emily...
Emily is a beautiful girl, as you can see... and she definitely knew how to pose. The best thing about Emily's session is that she really did a good job at giving me a range of expressions and that is what really makes her images interesting.

What a beautiful name, Skyler! And it fits her perfectly. This girl has a mega-watt smile and some star power on the basketball court.
Normally a t-shirt and jeans type of girl, Skyler took it up a notch for her senior pictures. Look at those beautiful nails! Good thing she just finished basketball camp, those puppies wouldn't last long there. :)
I had a blast with Skyler and her bf's mom during her Scandalous photo shoot. We drove to a couple unique locations and of course we had to do a field of wildflowers because every girl wants that classic image. But take a look at the beautiful blue sky! It was a gorgeous day.

Good evening everyone! I'm working late tonight. Just finished a big family session and the guys are hanging with grams and gramps so I'm alone catching up on more work.
I just wanted to share a few images from a session a little while back. This little cutie's mommy knew me a looong time! :) Yeah, I'm THAT old!
I was good friends with her in high school and had since went our separate ways, not keeping in touch until I delved into the world of facebook and TA DA! Instant connectivity to old friends and new acquaintances. I really enjoy FB no matter how much my husband makes fun of it!
So I've gotten a little caught up on Kelly and her daughter, but I was thrilled a couple months ago when she messaged me saying she'd like to do a session the next time she came down to visit her parents. I guess she had seen enough of my posts to convince her she needed her own work of art!
I hope you enjoy looking at a few of these images. Kelly has already seen the whole gallery (just today) and had to email me, facebook message me, and text me to let me know who much she loved them! I LOOOOVED that!

I just wanted to share my excitement for a couple cuties and their families.
The first is Kamri and her photo won 3rd place in the digitally enhanced category of McKenna Professional's Tiny Tots Contest.
It's their 29th Annual National Children's Contest, so there were entries from across the United States.
She won a $15 Toys R Us gift card...
And the second cutie I need to congratulate is John (JP) Lynne. He won 2nd place in the bloopers category and he will be receiving a $25 Toys R Us gift card!

Hooray! :) I'm so happy for these kids.
They were some cute photos, but the contest is supposed to be judged on the cuteness of the kid, not so much the photography... but a good photographer never hurts! :)

Megan & Ryan : Beautiful Wedding Photography : Mason City, IA

This gorgeous couple was featured earlier this year in a post about their winter engagement session... well, it's summer, finally! And their wedding day was perfect in spite of the storms that hit days before and the night of their wedding.
The wedding was at Reformed Christian Church in Mason City, IA and the reception followed at the Mason City Country Club.
We were able to make some stops along the way to the reception, including East Park and PM Park in Clear Lake, with the wedding party and get those fun, outdoor pictures that everyone loves! My favorite is the one of the wedding party jumping on the beach. I had so many other great ideas that we just didn't have time for... there never seems to be enough! :)
I can't wait to share these with Megan and Ryan... so I'm going to stop writing and just say...

Carys : Newborn Portait Photography

Carys (pronounced like Paris... only with a K-sounding C) is a sweet little chunk of baby goodness. :) Her parents live all the way out by Springfield, VA but they were home visiting and thanks to my never-ending blog and facebook presence, they thought of having me do a photo session for them during their stay.
I'm really glad they did... I think Carys is a great baby and her mommy is so beautiful and laid-back to boot! She said my favorite words... "Do whatever you like, you're the artist." Can't get much better than that!!!
So I had this idea to use the American flag in a couple pictures because it was close to the Fourth of July and it turned out that her daddy was in the military... so I can't wait to hear what he thinks of those images.
And our main objective, going into the session was to get some cute pictures of Carys in her baptismal gown and let's just say... it was gorgeous! They had a wonderfully talented gal create it out of leftover fabric from mom's wedding dress and the peachy colored panels are from grandma's wedding dress. Isn't that amazing? What an heirloom piece!
As for the rest of the session... that was spent just doing my traditional "style" of clean, simple "real.life" portraits.

Emily : Baby Portrait Session

This little cutie was a ton of fun to photograph. We met at her grandparent's home and did some fun shots in the yard and later in the house...
Her mommy had bought her the most adorable clothes. I love the headbands she created to match the dresses.
This age, right before their first birthday, is such a great time to get your child photographed because they have so many great expressions and it allows me to create some really amazing images that showcase your son/daughter's personality.
Also, if you plan ahead, it allows you to have me design some really unique first birthday invites!

The Erbes Family

I love, love, love this family. I have been photographing them for a few years now and we did her mom's side this session. They live in the country near Sioux Falls, SD so I get to travel out there and enjoy working in some gorgeous State Parks!
I enjoy the change of pace, but I love being home for my family on my regular work days.
So we got lucky and had some beautiful weather. It was a blast. The kids were really good, but it wasn't easy getting all four, age 5 and under, to look, stand normal, and smile at the same time.
The youngest, she's not a big fan of the camera, so I was working my butt off. I even resorted to my slap-trick. Yeah, you guessed it. Slap myself in the face for a laugh! :) Works great for the guys... but you wouldn't believe... it works better for the girls!!!
Well, back to work. It's my birthday - yup! - good 'ol 29!
So I'm hustling to get stuff done before picking up Collin so I can have dinner with the family and eat cake. Yummmm!
Have a wedding this weekend, so I'm sure I'll be posting those pictures before too long. Can't wait!

The Lutz Family : Northern Iowa Family Portraits

It was rainy last Friday, and as I watched the weather go from bad to worse around noon I was worried I'd need to reschedule the Lutz family photo shoot. Which is hardly ever a good thing, because it can be so difficult to coordinate multiple family schedules. But, luckily, even though it looked like rain... they said "Let's give it a shot!".
Thankfully the rain held out and right toward the end of the session the sun came out. Actually, I was happy that we had some clouds, bright sunshine isn't the best for taking photographs anyhow - too harsh of shadows and people end up squinting.
You may or may not recognize the little blonde boy, but he's been featured on my blog before... as a newborn. Boy has he changed! I love catching up with the families that I have photographed in the past.
I didn't hang around long after the session, since the family was getting ready to have a birthday party and I had to get home to my two loves... but I wish I could have snuck a piece of cake before I left! LOL! (I'm slightly addicted to desserts, in case you didn't already know)

Daisy Blue Naturals

I met Jena, founder and CEO, of Daisy Blue Naturals at some BNI meetings I attended. The BNI organization is all about networking, and that's exactly what they do... each week on Thursday at 7:30 am!
Well, needless to say... it's pretty difficult for me to get up to Albert Lea that early when I'm the one responsible for getting Collin to daycare. He likes to sleep in until about 7:30 and I can't say that I really want to change that! :) Can you blame me?
Fortunately, Jena didn't hold it against me and I was able to set up a time to take some portraits of her employees and some "at work in the lab" shots.
I really enjoyed seeing her operation. It's located in Albert Lea, not too far from the high school. I got the impression they have a really great thing going. There were several employees and they all seemed very happy and hard working.
Taking their portraits made them a little nervous, but laughter and talk of families and children always seems to put people at ease.

Marlee : Newborn Portraits

Ever since her mommy brought her to my studio last year I've taken quite a few pictures of a little cutie named Morgan, that I'm sure you remember seeing in previous posts. This time, I was honored with getting to photograph Morgan's new little sister!
Marlee was just nine days old when I took these beautiful newborn portraits of her in my studio. Of course, older sister, Morgan had to be included too! I can't believe how photogenic these two girls are.
During our session, Marlee was an angel. She wasn't fussy at all. I was so happy I got to use this cute new antique looking pottery tub that I found and also that her mommy had so many cute hats and headbands for us to play with.
I am in love with this ruffle diaper cover she found too! Gotta love shopping on Etsy! :)

Stumpe Family : Family Portraits Northwood, IA

What a day! We went from pouring rain this morning to HOT, HUMID and sunny this afternoon. I have been busy on the computer today editing and ordering before the weekend. I am so glad it's Friday! Since I worked Sat and Sunday last weekend, I need a break. Of course, I'm working again the next two Saturdays, but that's okay! At least I'm staying busy, right?!
I had a lot of fun with the Stumpe family on Monday. They were my first Hope's Angel Session and it felt really good to use the gift God's provided me to help out a family that has had more than their share of hardships.
When the mom of these two little guys told me she had never had a family picture (and the youngest is three) I was so thankful I had offered to do this. I can't imagine not having all our family pictures. Our walls would be pretty bare without them! ;)
But seriously, it's so nice to share... don't you think?

The Carlsen Family : Family Portraits Northwood, IA

I was thrilled when my neighbor wanted to hire me to photograph her whole extended family when they were getting together for her mom's birthday. I know this kind of work isn't the most artistic or creative, but it is an infinitely better experience when you have a seasoned professional taking the shots versus an amateur, family member... or a tripod! :) You'll know exactly what I mean if you've ever tried it.
First of all, when you're dealing with so many people... especially with so many youngsters, you need to be ready on time and able to make decisions in a snap so that everyone can be arranged in a pleasing manner before your subjects start getting restless.
I think the family really enjoyed watching me try to get the babies' attention. I was jumping around and making animal sounds... guess you had to be there! ;)
But that's what it takes to get this kind of shot, an heirloom photo documenting their family tree - as it is - this moment in time. I could never win an award for this image, but photos like these are treasured and passed down from generation to generation. They are pulled out for exciting events like 50th Wedding Anniversaries and Family Reunions... and they are tucked into the pages of Genealogy Books. And that, to me, means so much more than any artistic merits.
I want to remind my readers that it's so important to take these types of family photos because you just don't know what life has in store. One of the gals in the photo is going in on Friday for surgery because she will be having some tumors removed... we pray that they aren't malignant, but only God knows what's in store for this family in the next year... let's hope it's only adding new members.

What is Custom Photography?

Hey there everyone! I'm quickly recovering from my oral surgery on Tuesday when I had all four of my wisdom teeth removed. I'm taking it easy this week, but can't help but want to share something for you on my blog. So I thought I'd feature this nice little article from a great photographer I know, explaining why a boutique custom photography studio like mine is so very different than a chain-store photography experience or the "just-starting-out" photographers.

What is Custom Photography?

The photographic art you choose to place on your wall is ultimately the result of the vision of the photographer. This vision, coupled with what you wear to your session, the environment, the lighting, even the mood the subjects are in at the time of photographing creates the work that you will want to proudly display on your walls forevermore.

Your first step in the process is more about determining who you are, who your family is and then seeking a photographer that reflects your style. For instance let’s say your family is extremely outdoorsy and loves playing on the beach. You start determining what style you like, browse through photography website portfolios and determine if any of the styles exhibited there would be a good fit with your life and family style. You have already determined that you should probably seek out a beach type photographer (that is if you live near a beach) and then begin narrowing the field down a bit.

Finally after a bit of internet research, you have narrowed it down to two photographers who do what seems like solid work, the sort of outdoor beach look you desire. It is now time to ask yourself: Do you like photographer A’s style over photographer B’s style? Is it because the people in the images of A’s style are having a great time and it seems very caught up in the moment vs. B photographer more posed, looking in the camera images? If this is a case, you probably like LIFESTYLE photography or perhaps even take it a step further and define your desired style as a PHOTOJOURNALISTIC photography style. The photographer you probably should choose is photographer A because their style is very similar to the style you desire.

What custom photography ultimately is all about is choice and experience. Custom photography is about finding someone who will photograph your family, give you devoted 1:1 attention without worry of who is next ‘in line’ or the feeling of a crowded portrait studio.

* A custom photographer will typically show you a fairly extensive gallery culled to only show the good images that meet the photographers’ creative sensibilities.
* Often the images are fully edited images-color corrected with blemishes and undereye circles removed.
* Custom photographers are also known as boutique studios, offering a range of products and unparalleled service. Think Lexus vs. Hyundai, think Nordstrom vs. WalMart.

A custom photography experience should have you, the client and your experience in mind.

Teething Bling by SmartMom Jewelry

Well, today I'm thinking about teeth... my wisdom teeth to be exact. I have an appointment this afternoon for a consultation to have them removed and - needless to say - I'm not looking forward to it! :(
So I was trying to figure out what I wanted to share on my blog today and I remembered these pictures I look last week of some jewelry I stumbled across during one of my wanderings across the wonderful worldwide web.

Teething Bling was inspired by babies who like to tug on their mom's jewelry. Stylish and beautiful, Teething Bling was designed for little ones to handle and chew. Made from the same material as many teething toys, the jewelry looks great on Moms, Grandmas and other caregivers but is safe for curious babies. Pretty and practical!
I responded to a tweet from them about baby models for upcoming marketing materials and got my samples in the mail soon after that. The pieces are perfect. The concept is so simple, and from a distance they look like stone-type pendant necklaces but they are perfect for that stage in a new mom's life where she usually gives up wearing jewelry unless she wants it to be destroyed! :) I know, I've been there!
The clasp at the back of the satin cord necklace is just a couple plastic pieces that fit together snugly, but if pulled hard - release easily so neither you or your necklace are injured when those little chubby hands latch on.
I had one of my favorite babies in this age range, Ava, come into the studio to model the pieces for me to share with SmartMom.

Kamri - Baby Portrait Session

Kamri is a little cutie, for sure! She is that perfect 10 month age for sitting up strong and even standing holding on to something.
She was perfect for my angel baby set I've been dying to break out for just the right kiddo. And she proved just how ambitious she was when she crawled up on the little chair that she was supposed to be sitting on! :)
Of course, we also got a few cute ones for her parents that are my signature style - very simple and classic - beautiful in b&w.
I loved working with this young, happy family. It's so great to see how involved the dads have been lately. Everyone that's come to the studio has been really helpful.

Newborn Twins Portrait Session

These two little angels had me a little nervous about the session, I must admit. I tend to like to get the newborns to go to sleep and I knew when their parents arrived and said they slept the whole way in the car I was in trouble! :)
LOL! Oh, well. I guess we'll just do awake pictures!
It was great though. They were really pretty content for the most part. And the times that they fussed made for some really cute, funny pictures.
I know these are going to be some great memories for the family to treasure.
We also took some of their five-year-old son by himself and with his baby brother and sister. He has definitely learned the word "cheese" and it was a little bit of a challenge to get a natural smile.
I am excited to share all the images with mom and dad and see what they have to say.

Baby Avery : Newborn Photography Session

This baby girl is the daughter of a good friend of our family. He used to hang out at our house all the time after we were first married. And I didn't really mind because he is so easy going and it seems like his daughter has taken on his laid-back personality. Although, I think her mommy tends to be that way too.
She obviously loves being cuddled and it shows in the photographs with her mom and dad. When we tried doing the shots where she was lying by herself things got a bit tricky because she just didn't want to go to sleep... but after another bottle and a big burp, she finally gave in! :)

The Schuhmacher Family : Newborn & Family Portraits

This adorable, young family has just been blessed with an adorable baby girl, Lauren and I had the honor of taking her first professional portraits and their first family pictures as a family of four!
I love shooting images of newborns. They tend to take a long time, by the time I get them asleep for the cute naked sleeping shots and then awake when mom and dad are holding them... but it's so worth it. They are just fun to be around. I don't even realize how much time has flown by.
By the end, though, I usually feel like I need a nap! LOL! And THAT reminds me why I'm not ready to have that second one yet. He he.
Their 3 year old, Hannah is the cutest thing ever! I LOVE her curly hair. I had fun helping her into all her girlie outfits while mom took care of her baby sis.
Dressing Collin isn't near that much fun. He complains when I want to put two shirts on him for the layered look.
One of my favorites is where she had a little lip gloss I gave her and she's trying to put it on... I imagine her parents will see that look more than a few times in her teen years!

Kayla & Joe : Engagement Portrait Photography

These two lovebirds are just the most fun couple I have photographed in a while. For some reason, around Kayla, I get totally silly and act like 100% Becca - my friends will know what I mean. LOL! We were just laughing the whole session.
I loved it. I just couldn't stop. This leads me to believe that the wedding will be a blast as well. I am pretty sure I'll be more toned-down that day, but I'll still be working my magic, getting them to laugh and smile so they aren't focused on the fact that they're in front of the camera, but on the real reason we're photographing them... because they are in LOVE!
You can totally tell from these pictures and if you meet them in person, you would agree. They are going to have a lifetime of happiness, I can feel it.

Baby Grayson: Newborn Photography

Hi there! How's it going for you today? Good I hope! I'm happy because I painted my kitchen this weekend and it looks FAB-U-LOUS! I can't believe it took me 8 years of living here to do it! :)
Back to the workload... I just put the finishing touches on my good friend's baby pictures. Her little guy, Grayson, was featured on my blog back in February just after he was born, about two months premature, but he's doing great now! He looks amazing. He was at around 6 1/5 lbs, I think, when I took these... And he was such a good little guy.
I wanted to do something very clean and classic. I went right to their home and took these there so she wouldn't have to bring him out and he was just happy as a clam.
I'm so happy for Lynsie and Matt. Such a beautiful, healthy boy.

Good Deeds

This week has been flying by and I'd like to take a second to share with you a few good deeds I've done lately. I am a firm believer in the philosophy that the more you give, the more you receive (not that it's your reason for giving... but that just seems to be what usually happens)... So I'm sharing the love lately.
The first group I'm helping out is an organization called “Hope’s Angels” that grew out of an idea by Northwood resident Kim Koenigs as a way to reach out to mothers with children who have left abusive marriages. Rather than give money, volunteers provide services that may be needed, from a home-cooked meal to help with odd jobs. A local church has offered handmade quilts for mothers and their children. Other individuals have offered to provide hair styling and to prepare meals. I am planning on donating my photography services to these moms. I believe everyone deserves beautiful memories of their children.
Secondly, I will be giving St. Theodore Catholic School a donation for their live auction to be held this Saturday, April 17th at 6:30pm. This annual event helps raise funds to help support this great school. The item featured from my studio will be on the live auction and is an On-location Session and 20x30 Canvas Gallery Wrap. This donation has a total value of $720. I really hope it raises a good amount of money for the school.
Lastly, I am donating my services to the Humane Society of Albert Lea. This opportunity to give back came to me from one of my Pet Model participants. On a quarterly basis (as my schedule allows) I hope to continue to photograph some of the pets that need to find homes. I already took photos of several of them last week and I'm excited to share their pictures with you. To be totally honest, I got a little nervous when I saw the pitbulls since they have such a bad rap, but they were both very sweet dogs! I couldn't believe how well behaved they were, they all kenneled easily and weren't wild at all. Feel free to contact the Humane Society at (507) 377-8501 if you think you'd like to adopt one of these cuties into your family.
Hopefully, these new, updated portraits will help these guys find new homes faster!

He wanted to wait until his braces were removed and that joyful day finally arrived a few weeks ago! I can totally relate. I had my braces on for five or six years! And I got mine removed right before my senior year so I know what it's like to not want those annoying brackets on your yearbook pic.
It was raining the day we were supposed to do the session, but Nick is so easy going, he was up for anything. So we shot half of this in the rain... and then we took a break and he came back and it was sunny! So there's a real variety of lighting situations in the outdoor pictures!

Spring Cleaning + Couch for Sale!

Good morning! What a beautiful day! I am excited to share more with you about my project to Throw Out Fifty Things based off the book by Gail Blanke that I blogged about on Monday.
I have been getting lots of compliments from my mother-in-law who thinks my house has never looked better!
Anyhow, on to our task at hand. We start with your bedroom. When you walk in, what do you see? How do you feel? Throw out anything that doesn't make you feel relaxed and comfortable. Bedrooms should be havens.
Don't just move stuff around, actually get rid of it. Remember, if it makes you feel good just to keep it (positive emotional attachment) then keep it, regardless of whether or not you will use it again... but be bold!
Your aim is to create not merely a "tidy" life, but to clarify who we are and what's important now... and answer "What the heck am I doing here?" Pretty deep stuff for cleaning out your bedroom, I know! But if you read the book you will understand. She explains how holding on to clothes that aren't really your style anymore has a way of keeping you in the past and not living in the present.
One more thing... a direct quote from Gail... "you've got to catch yourself, too, if as you go through this process you beat yourself up about how you should have done it sooner or better. We're here now. And we're doing it now. And it turns out that now is exactly the right time."
Powerful stuff! LOVE IT.

Amazing Book: Gail Blanke's Throw Out Fifty Things

I have been reading a lot more this year than in the last couple, thanks to my son getting older and less high-maintenance if you know what I mean! I've really been enjoying some good books and I'd like to share my most recent love with you.
Its called Throw Out Fifty Things by Gail Blanke. It is such a fast, easy read that inspires you to not only clean out your home, and office, but your life in general and focus on who you really are and what you really want.

The subtitle is: Clear the Clutter, Find your Life and that's exactly what the author inspires you to do.
The first part is very straight forward... it talks about "fueling the urge to purge" and the "Rules of Disengagement"... here they are:
1. If it weighs you down, clogs you up, or just plain makes you feel bad about yourself, throw it out, give it away, sell it. Let it go and move on.
2. If it just sits there, taking up room and contributing nothing positive to your life, throw it out. If you're not moving forward you're moving backward. Throwing out what's negative helps you rediscover what's positive.
3. Don't make the decision - whether to keep it or toss it - a hard one. If you have to weigh the pros and cons too long or agonize over the right thing to do, throw it out.
4. Don't be afraid. This is your life we're talking about. The only one you've got for sure. You don't have the time, energy, or room for physical and psychic waste.

Aren't those awesome! Clear-cut, to-the-point kind of rules. No more, "Well, I might use it someday... or so and so gave it to me..." If it doesn't meet one of those rules, it's gone. She does remind you later that if it does make you happy, just to have it, even if it's not useful or practical it's okay to keep something. But only if it's a positive feeling.
I am thinking this week I will post daily about this book because I love it so much and I totally recommend buying it. I got my copy from the library, but even after finishing it, I want to go buy my own copy to have and refer to whenever I start to feel overwhelmed by all the "stuff" - It also has some great references in the back for recycling, selling and organizing supplies.

Oh, and she has a great website with a downloadable workbook that is pretty much the gist of the book if you're not willing to pony up the dough. It will get you moving, but I recommend buying the book because of all the great anecdotes she shares of her own letting go and those she coaches... they really hit every key point and you feel like she really relates to your purging hang-ups.

This little cutie, just so happens to be my nephew. Isn't he a heartbreaker!? I just want to pinch his cheeks when I see him. Yes, I'm going to be THAT Aunt! :)
It's been way too long since I got JP in front of my camera... where did that first year go???
I love seeing this guy grow and change. Hopefully his mom and dad will want to have another one soon so I can take more pictures! ;) Ha ha!
Here's a few of my favorites from the session. It was so hard to pick. It's almost like narrowing down pictures of my own son... it's just that much harder than someone you don't know as well. You think every little smirk is the cutest.
He loves his tractors... he takes after his Daddy that way. And his Mom made me take the picture of his "sad face". Don't you just feel sorry for the poor guy??

My new little toy... (not for my professional work! LOL!)

Today, I was thinking I could share with you a little bit about the new point and shoot camera I recently purchased. I know lots of people ask me about what I use for my professional camera, but what about when I just want to take some snapshots on the go? I definitely don't want to lug around my digital SLR all the time!
So, I admit, I tend to be kind of frugal when it comes to my cameras... I like to get my money's worth out of them before I get a new one. Granted, by the time I've had it for a year I usually want to upgrade, but I hold out because I know there will always be a newer, better model announced again before long.
Just last month, my Sony Cybershot W290. It's got 12.1 Megapixels (plenty of room for enlargements) and 5x Optical Zoom (way better than digital zoom). Now that I've had it for a couple weeks I'm getting the hang of the layout (being a full fledged Canon girl in the past).
I love the cute design. I picked the blue one and it's a really pretty jewel tone. It's not all that light, but I don't mind that because it feels really solid. Like it could take a beating that a two year old could dish out - if you know what I mean!
One of my favorite things is how responsive it is. Powering on takes no time at all, and focusing and storing the image are even faster. I always hated it when I pressed the shutter a little too soon and didn’t get the shot I wanted and having to wait (even if it was only a second or so) LOL! Also, this one doesn’t have a very long delay after you hit the button and when it actually takes the image. I’ll admit, there is still a tiny delay… but I only notice it because I have been spoiled by my SLR for sure!

I had a fun time yesterday shooting portraits of this gentleman. He was the winning bidder at the Albert Lea/Rendezvous Annual Gourmet Auction. I was happy that my donation was able to generate $450 at the event!
Well, that was just at the end of January and Reed didn't waste any time calling to book his photo session. He was all set to go in his buckskinner outfit when he arrived.
I must say, I want a pair of these fur boots! Maybe I could start a new trend! ;)

I just found this product online and think it would make such a great gift for a bride and groom that I've decided to offer it as a bonus item for any bride that books her wedding photography with me this week (before Friday 4pm).
The bonus gift is a digital photo album! Isn't this thing neat?!

I would load about fifty of the bride and groom's favorite images onto the album and they could load more later... honeymoon, new home, future kids??? :) LOL! It holds 4 GB of photos so you could fit quite a bit on here.

Good morning! I am sooo thrilled that it's finally warming up and this snow is melting. I love the sunshine!
So today is a very fun day for me. I spent most of this week working on the computer and I think I deserve a little break. So this morning I was invited to the BNI Early Birds Networking meeting. Where I met some new people and learned more about their businesses. I am definitely thinking I need to join because the people there seem to be on top of their game when it comes to word of mouth referrals and you all know how important those are to me.
I also had a chance to stop in the BG Loft again and they had just gotten in some new clothing... Mmmm! Those girls know how to pick 'em! I couldn't help myself... even though I just went shopping last Sunday.
Now, I am doing a few things here at the studio before heading out for lunch. I just wanted to post some of the cute doggie models I got in at the end of my Pet Promotion in February.

The Gathering Place: Northwood, IA

If you're a crafty person and like to knit or crochet, then you're going to love the Gathering Place in Northwood. Even if you don't know how to knit, but love those kind of items. You will be in luck there too, because they have finished products for sale that will make you melt.
I took notice of the new shop last fall when Pat Deen opened the business. She has been busy since, adding inventory and creating new opportunities daily.
When you walk in the store, you're immediately welcomed and asked if you'd like a mug of fresh coffee. Feel free to browse the shelves or just sit and chat. Pat and her staff are all amazingly friendly and Pat has the sweetest Southern accent. You could just listen to her talk all day long.
I had the courage to ask Pat if she'd like a couple of my images to display when I noticed she was promoting little knit hats for babies in her window. She was thrilled and said "Heck, yes!" That's what I love about her. She's all about helping fellow business owners in the community.
If we could all work together more often... the world would be a much less stressful place! :)

Grayson

I adore my work. I know I've said it before... I truely believe it is my calling. The key gift God gave me that he wants me to share with as many people as I can in this life I've been given.
So it makes me happy when I can give a gift of photography to a friend. Especially a friend in need.
Most recently I got to gift my photography to my friends Lynsie and Matt.

I've known Lynsie for about 6 years now. We met when I had a "real job" LOL!
I love her dearly and miss the days when we worked across the hall from each other and had lunches together and all that good stuff... but we've both moved on to bigger and better things since ... she married the love of her life... Matt... and I felt so blessed when they hired me to take their wedding portraits. We had so much fun and their album turned out just beautiful.
Fast forward three years later and Matt and Lynsie are expecting the birth of their first child in April... Well, this little guy had plans of his own!
After going in for a regular 28 week checkup, it was brought to their attention that her blood pressure was very high and she was admitted to the hospital and soon transferred to Rochester after being diagnosed with the most severe form of pre-eclampsia.
Well, that was Tuesday and by Friday, Lynsie and Matt had a beautiful and tiny, yet pretty healthy baby boy - all things considered! He was named Grayson Charles and I think he's as cute as a button!
I was able to take some portraits of Lynsie and Grayson together the first chance I got and was able to use them to design a beautiful birth announcement at their request.
I was just over visiting again on Monday and he is doing so well and has grown so much! He's up to three and a half lbs now and he is just such a miracle. I can't wait to go see them again. (I can't believe I didn't bring my camera last time! But sometimes it's good not to have that thing permanently attached!) :)
I even got a chance to hold him on Monday. I think I must have been the proudest friend in the world. My friend Lynsie is handling this all so well. She continues to amaze me with her strength and faith.
I would also like to mention that her hubby, Matt is in the National Guard and has served our country on two tours over in the Middle East and he needs to be given a big THANK YOU for that and his dedication to keeping our freedom and defending our country.
He is also a great writer and has been keeping up their Caring Bridge journal with the true dedication of a military man! :)
What an amazing couple and what a journey their lives have been so far and I look forward to watching Grayson grow into the little charmer that I know he will be.
I am blessed to have them in my life.

Baby Christine: Newborn Photography

Baby Christine is the month old daughter of one of my favorite wedding couples from 4 1/2 years ago. I was thrilled when Christine's mommy and daddy wanted to bring her all the way from Dodge Center to my studio! :)
I had a blast catching up with her parents and loving on her. I just wanted to eat her, she's so yummy! I love her cute little cheeks.
She definitely got me thinking about how I'd love to have a little baby girl... but I'm going to hold off. And I have my own personal baby-fever vaccination at home. He's a two-year old named Collin! LOL!
So I was very patient with Christine and got her to sleep for most of the session.
I am so happy with how these pictures turned out. I just love getting to play with newborns. They allow you to be so creative.

Creativity - More than words

Okay, so the way I see it... everyone who chooses a boutique photography studio experience over any other option is usually doing it because they want a high-quality, unique product.
Fortunately, knowing what I do about building a brand aiming for this kind of reputation... I know that it's not enough to just say I'm creative. I need to constantly be showing my friends and customers that I am.
I try to do this frequently by showcasing new images/products/designs that I've created on the blog here. Well... Lately this habit might have gotten a little carried away! LOL!
It all started Tuesday when I was inspired by a little snippet in Better Homes & Gardens magazine where I saw a cute craft using cupcake liners. I kind of got totally in my "creative zone" wanting to use this idea for Collin's Valentine's Day cards for his little buddies at daycare.
Needless to say, I spent a good 5 hours, prob 6 when you factor in a little shopping time! I know, I know... but I've gotta say that I didn't spend that much. I used a bunch of scrapbooking paper that I'd bought in the past and never really had a use for. And the photos I just printed out on my own laser printer.
I also packaged up some mini cupcakes and cookies to go along with the cards... what do you think? Aren't they just adorable???
I totally love to do crafty projects and I'm TOTALLY taking advantage of this time before Collin can tell me that he wants some store-bought Thomas the Train valentines for his friends... I'm guessing if I asked, that's probably what he'd choose! :)
Ahh, next year will be a different story I'm afraid. But that's a good thing. Maybe I'll spend those five hours next year doing something even better... like SLEEP! Ha ha!

Megan & Ryan

I tell you what, if I was into bio-engineering and had the ability to clone any of my customers, I think Megan and Ryan would be at the top of my list! :) LOL!
They are really, a perfect example of my ideal wedding clients. Ryan was in a wedding I photographed last summer and Megan was also there as a guest. They have witnessed me, first-hand in my element working. Not trying to impress them, in particular, just doing what I do... as a professional.
Then they got to experience viewing their friends proofs on my website and see a "whole" wedding, not just a few of the best shots and then they also got to view the finished album design once that was posted as well. And that, my friends, is the way to choose your wedding photographer! :)
It's just that anyone can put together an awesome website these days, buy a cool template, photograph a few family and friends and then start a blog posting a few random shots and short blurbs to make people think you are "in demand".
Unfortunately, I'm one of those brides who made the mistake of hiring someone I didn't really know and it didn't turn out the best. ( I KNOW! You'd think, me, of all people would get it right!) Needless to say, my wedding day memories are a blur - like most brides - but I don't have photographs of all the fun stuff, the details and emotions to fill in the blanks.
So, take it from me... whatever you do, if you're looking for a wedding photographer. Take the time to really get to know them, their personality, etc. If you've got a deposit down and you hate your engagement photos... it might be best if you just cut your losses and invest a little more in someone better.
It's one of those days you will NEVER get back and photographs are really all you have left after the flowers are wilted, the dress is dirty, and the cake has been eaten.
Take my word for it!

I've had the pleasure of photographing this little cutie since she was a newborn. I love to catch up with her mommy and I'm so glad they are moving back to their hometown and closer to me! :)
Little Sophie is not like my little guy that can be convinced/coerced/bribed into staying in one place or sitting on something to take a picture in the perfect lighting/background.
She's a bit more shy and likes to do things her own way. :) I guess I can say the same about myself! LOL! So her mommy and I were challenged to get a few great shots. Here are a few of my favorites.

I am excited to share this adorable little girl with you today. I think she looks just like a porcelain doll. She has beautiful skin... and the most precious expressions.
Her mom was one of my past Seniors and that kind of made me feel a little old! But I think she makes an amazing mom. Very happy, laid back and gentle... just what Gracie needs. Grandma was there too, so we were lucky to do a "three generations" portrait as well.
I was thrilled that Grace needed her portraits taken right now because I had some dresses I wanted to photograph on children and she was the perfect size for one of my favorites! This cute little black and white lace dress with the big bow and pink flower fit her perfectly. I tended to impede her crawling abilities, which didn't really bother me that much, if you know what I mean! ;) *wink*
I wish I could photograph babies like Gracie every day. She was so easy... the only challenge was trying to get her to stay in the right lighting as she liked to keep coming towards me and the camera as I worked to get those sweet smiles.

Well, this week has been filled with fun and lots going on. I have some great interest in the pet photography going on... and I'm trying to check some things off my to-do list that have been on there for a loooong time! :) It was also Collin's birthday this week and the party is this weekend so lots to do with that, plus, I'm painting my living room! Whew!
But, yesterday I had lots of fun with my good friend, Katie, enjoying some much deserved R&R. We hit all of my favorite local stores... Ben's Floral & Lakeside Cafe, Stadheims, Addies, JoAnn's, and I wanted to share my new favorite hot spot with you.
It's called the BG Loft and it's located in the Brick Furniture store. The loft is run by the 16 & 18 year old daughters of the owners and they are the ones who pick out all the clothes. There's not a huge selection... think boutique! But it's one of those places you can go and buy something and know that you're not going to run into a million other people wearing the same shirt.
The items are trendy, but not over the top. It's not only for teens, women of all ages with a strong sense of style would appreciate their selection. I have a little trouble finding items that fit because I need L or XL (I'm no skinny mini!) :) And those are the sizes that seem to go first (Imagine that! There are plenty of other people like me!) LOL!

Pets, Pets, Pets!

These sweet old poochies were brought in by one of my Facebook friends, she and her hubby have had them for all of their married life. The oldest is starting to have some health problems and I am so thankful that I decided to do the pet promotion so they can have some beautiful images of their babies.
We had a hard time getting Daisy, the dachshund to sit still, let alone take a group photo... but I think that we accomplished our goal!

This little cutie's mommy found my studio simply by Google-ing North Iowa Photographers and liked what she found on my website. I have to say I'm so glad she liked my site. I've put a lot of time, thought and not to mention a little money ;) into it.
It was fun taking their family portraits and focusing on some individual shots of Wyatt. He's at that adorable chubby baby stage where he can sit up good and respond well to toys, singing, and funny faces. I love this age!!!
We did the session right on location in Belmond and it was so convenient for them not to have to worry about the little guy getting crabby in the car, or having to pack up all his clothes, toys, bottles and diapers. On-location is such a great option for new moms and really, families of all ages.
I am really looking forward to building a great friendship with Wyatt and his family. If they'll have me, I'd love to be their photographer for life! Such nice people.

Cracks in the Concrete

Happy Saturday Everyone!
Today I wanted to share with you the CD cover of one of my customers, Jen Ordalen. She is just launching the release of "Cracks in the Concrete" and I am so thrilled to say that she used my images for the front and back cover.
Jen hired me back in the fall, and maybe you remember me posting about our session back then... well, here's the finished product!
And it looks amazing if I do say so myself!!!
Even better is how awesome Jen's voice sounds. You need to stop by Stadheim Jewelers in Albert Lea where they have copies of the CD.
She's got a unique blend of soulful, bluesy, but a bit country - type of sound.
There's also going to be a launch party soon and I will try to share details about it on my blog if I can. Watch the website for a taste of her music... I'll have it playing on there the next month or so!
Better get going! It is such a beautiful winter day outside. Collin and I were just out there playing in the snow.

So we've all been there! Fumbling around in our purse for a pen and a scrap of paper to write our contact info down for someone new we meet. Sure, we have our cell phones these days and it's fairly easy to just punch in a new contact... but why have all those extra numbers in your phonebook?

Hi there! Well I just was thinking about how much I love animals and this is a great time of year to have a little promotion centered around pets. I know that we just adore our chocolate lab, Ruby and I can get some beautiful shots of her and the pictures of her and Collin together are just priceless! Remember the shot I had on my ordering page? I just changed it this morning, but I'm sure those of you who've seen it, remember. "Cuter than the dog" was written on Collin's shirt. :)
So here's the details. I think that there are lots of single people or married couples that don't have children that would love the excuse to come get a professional portrait taken of their "family" and I am all for it!
I also open this up to people who want to have their child in with their pet, that's okay too! But the portraits are going to revolve around the pet and document that loving relationship you have with them.
Sound good?! Give me a call or send me an email if you're interested. Only the first twelve qualified models will be accepted!

Well hello there my friends!
I'm happy to say I'm starting out the new year right. I feel rather on top of things lately and I'm looking forward to organizing and creating new products and finding new ways to thank my wonderful customers in the next few weeks now that the holiday rush has passed.
I hope you have a minute to check out my website, it's full of all new images from this past year. It was so hard to choose only a few to showcase and I'll admit, the "Little Miracles" gallery is quite large... but those babies are so darn cute!!
I renamed a few of the sections, just to keep things fresh and avoid looking like those "copycats" out there! LOL! It's still not that earth-shatteringly original, I know, but you can only deviate so far from what's expected before people start looking at you like you've fell off your rocker. ;) There's also a little studio-tour gallery for those of you that haven't been to my studio in the last year.
Keep your eyes on the blog and facebook for new products, services and announcements. I can't wait to share all that I have in store with you! I love you, all my true, loyal fans. You're the best!

Merry Christmas!!!

Seasons greetings everyone! I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and safe travels as we go about our celebrating these next few days. Our family had a wonderful celebration last night and I look forward to Collin waking up this morning to open his presents. It is going to be a blast! I can't wait for him to unwrap his train set. He's going to flip! I'll try to take a few pictures ;) And if I can remember I will post some on here for my fans.
I love Christmas and I love Christmas Cards. Thank you to everyone that had me design their cards and thanks to everyone who sent me their lovely cards. I just adore any cards that have photos on them. They are so interesting and fun to get and save.
Here's a peek at our Christmas Card this year, in case you weren't on my list... which is getting longer and longer each year!!! Think I sent 150 this year!!! :)
But I love spending every penny! It's like a mini gift to all your friends. This year I did a cute square tri-fold so that helps explain all the different pages.
Well, better go... think I hear my angel waking! LOL!

Ho, ho, ho!
I'm really getting excited for Christmas. Mainly because it's finally in that time where it's too late to place orders to get before the holiday so I'm all caught up with work and have time to think about buying gifts and sending out my own Christmas Cards.
Speaking of Christmas Cards. I'd love to share some of the new designs I did this year with you. I wanted to share them earlier, but I didn't want to ruin the surprise for my customers who mailed them out to their friends who might be followers of my blog! :)
Here's a couple of my favorites. I just mailed mine out this weekend, so I'm going to wait till Wed to post mine on the blog for everyone.

Dancing with the Light... and Baby Grace

This weekend was awesome! I was down in Omaha, NE for a workshop called Dancing with the Light hosted by renowned photographer Michael Cerizo... http://www.cerizo.net/
He has been a professional photographer for 21 years and won lots of awards for his work... and he's a very talented businessman as well so there was tons of good information to soak up.
I really enjoyed the class and we got to do some shooting inside and outside in Omaha's Old Market that I'm excited to sort through and edit. I will share those soon.
First though, I have to share this little miracle named Grace. Her parents are the sweetest couple that I did engagement portraits for a while back. They were very excited to have me come to their home and do a newborn session.
It's so much easier for the parents of newborns when I go to them and I'm more than happy to do it!

Aarin and Matthew

I love taking photos of these cute little boys. Their mom used to do professional photography and I know that she's perfectly capable of getting some great shots on her own, so I appreciate it all the more that she books sessions with me at my studio.
I know just how hard it can be to do a "session" with your own child. Usually they last, um... say, 5 minutes! :) And you're lucky to get one or two good shots and they're done.
When it's someone else directing them that's not mom, they seem to be a little more tolerant... funny how that works. LOL!
I totally believe in going to other professional photographers for my own family photos. It's so worth the money. Lots of people think I can do it myself, with a tripod... but what they haven't realized is that it's the interaction between the person running the camera and the subjects that makes for those amazing images. You just can't get the right expressions beyond the "cheese" smiles.
This past year we drove an hour and a half to meet our photographers from Kalona, IA in Waverly for our family photos and I ADORE the images Heidi and Troy from Studio U made for us. In fact, they're supposed to be coming today!!! I can't wait!!!
Back to these adorable boys... here are a few of my favorites from their session. I can't believe how much they've changed since I took their pictures last December.

The Trytten's

It was a beautiful fall weather when we took the Trytten's family portraits the day after Thanksgiving. I really love the way this family coordinated their outfits. The colors really balanced out nicely with the greens of the trees behind them.
My favorites are the outdoor family photos... they were taken on the family farm and have a lot more significance.
The one tree that they posed by is called the "chain tree" because when their mom was growing up there that's where they used to chain the horses up. It's her favorite tree on the farm.
Now, granted it might have been a little nicer to do the chain tree picture in the summer or fall before the leaves fell off, but even without them it's still very special and with a family picture this big... coordinating all those schedules... it's something you just need to do when you get the chance and not wait for the timing to be perfect... because life is just too short to wait to take a photo like this!
We also went back to my studio and did a few shots with everyone dressed in black shirts that will be timeless. I love the picture of the four "originals" with their mom. :)

This beautiful newborn girl is the 10-day-old daughter of two of my favorite wedding clients, Danette and Kirk. I really enjoyed working with them back in 2005 and it was Danette's sister-in-law who was thoughtful enough to purchase a gift certificate for them to have a newborn session at my studio.
I'm so happy that Deb had that wonderful idea! I honestly believe that a gift certificate for work from my studio is one of the best gifts ever. Mainly because custom photography is truly a luxury that we don't buy for ourselves often enough... not because we don't want it, quite the opposite... because when we do splurge on it we love the images sooo much we want them all! But that shouldn't stop us from going and getting a few of our top favorites to update the walls. :)
And it's also because time just flies by so fast we just don't have the time to think of it ourselves. Danette and Kirk told me themselves that they would have never even thought about doing a session so soon... but just look at these images! They are going to treasure them for the rest of their lives... and their daughter will treasure them for the rest of hers... and her children... and it goes on and on.
The gift of photography is an amazing gift that will NEVER be thrown away or regifted! :) I promise!
